How to overcome wry neck

Getting a wry neck is no joke.  Haha, sorry, I couldn’t help myself!  Well now you know why I am a myotherapist and not a wordsmith….
Waking up with a neck that can’t move without pain is a pain in the neck – ok, ok, sorry, that was the last one, I promise….
Our muscles contract and relax, they work together in ways that help you move, help you stay upright, and well, just be you.  But every so often, they spasm and go out of balance, which is what happens with a wry neck / torticollis.
Good news is, they can be re wired to come out of the over contracted mode – and this is done through movement.  If you keep moving (always within your pain threshold, never beyond it), even if the movement is ever so slight, you are indeed speaking to the muscles, reminding them gently what they can do.  If you dont move, the wry neck will stay around longer. Watch this video for more info…

As stated in the video, there is a trick to taking this further.  Its via resisted movement.  For 10 seconds after a resisted movement, you have an even better chance to re wire the muscles, and get them back on track.
Make sure you do this 3-4 times in one sitting, and do 2-3 sittings over the first 24 hours of getting a wry neck.
After 48-72 hours, go and book yourself in with your myotherapist (or chiropractor / osteopath / physiotherapist ) to further assist your muscles to come back to their natural length.
